Welcome to GrettonOn

Welcome to GrettonOn

Thanks for having a look! This is a community website for Gretton and Grettoners. The aim is to have a forum where we can talk, post articles, suggestions and general info for others to read and contribute to. Hopefully as more people visit it’ll become a useful resource for Grettoners. And sorry about the website name – it’s a pun. You know – “Gettin’ On” and “Gretton Online”.

Of course there are already a couple of great websites for Gretton – like this Gretton Village one or the silver band website. But GrettonOn is more about up to date comments and people hopefully making their own contributions. If anyone wants to help with editorial or submitting more regular content, I’d be happy to share this.

A very grateful thank you to Marshall Ferguson

A very grateful thank you to Marshall Ferguson

For in excess of two decades, Marshall Ferguson has served the Parish Council enthusiastically and efficiently and for many of those years he has fulfilled the role of Chairman.

At last Mondays meeting of the Parish Council, the first item for consideration was the election of the Chairman for the forthcoming year. Marshall indicated that he felt it was now time for him to step down and allow another to take on the role and he nominated our current Vice Chairman Andrew Royle, to succeed him. The nomination was seconded by Tim Fox and carried unanimously by the Council. Andrew was delighted to be appointed and he will officially take control of the reins with effect from the next Parish Council meeting on the 11th June.

Grateful thanks go to Marshall from the Council and residents of Gretton for his hard work and endeavours over the years. He will continue as a Parish Councillor and the Council is pleased to confirm that he has agreed to be Vice Chairman in order to support Andrew and ensure a smooth transition.

Marshall has various official duties to perform at the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations which will be a fitting “grand finale” for him.

BBC FILMING IN THE VILLAGE

BBC FILMING IN THE VILLAGE

I was sitting in Lydia’s Coffee Shop yesterday morning when I heard excited female voices, sounding even more excited than usual. What is occurring? Oh, it’s, it’s, him, you know, him, he’s outside.
I went outside and there was Aled Jones and a film crew. Hello, I say, what are you doing – I’m not in the slightest bit Starr struck (unless it was Elle McPherson, Suzie Quatro, Blondie or Maria Callas)We are filming “Escape to The Country” – I then go into the virtues of living in this wonderful village – that’s good said Mr Jones – would you like to say that on camera. You cant keep an old theatrical down!
Said my bit and it will be screened early next year. The house in question is somewhere in The Maltings.

Gretton to Celebrate Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style.

Gretton to Celebrate Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style.

Villagers in Gretton are holding a huge street party to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The event will be in Kirby Road on Monday 4th June.

Terri Meechan, Street Party Chairman, said “There have been some fantastic ideas put forward. We hope that as many Gretton villagers and their friends and families will come along and be part of a memorable occasion for many years to come.”

The party will be officially opened at 12 noon by the Mayor of Corby, along with the Chair of the Parish Council, Councillor Marshall Ferguson and Miss Gretton, Zeenat Britt.

The event will feature a full concert programme with live bands and local acts performing throughout the Day. Gretton Silver Band will kick off the entertainment and will be followed by Unplugged and Thirsty, Elle Roberts; Three’s a Crowd, St James Church choir, Martin McEvoy’s Operatic Classics with the party being closed by Stubbully. The day will be supported by Corby Radio who will be broadcasting from their Big Black Bus.

The Street party will also feature a Best Dressed House competition, children’s and adults 1950’s fancy dress, street games, entertainers and stalls. A mini funfair will also be in the Village for the whole weekend. There will be something for everyone on the day!

Gretton Music Festival 2012, the biggest yet!

The Gretton Music Festival 2012, sponsored by eggbOx graphics, will feature an even wider range of performances than ever before.

Last year saw many concerts sold out throughout the village and this year we plan to build on that. We are delighted to have a number of performers back by popular demand. In particular, Gretton’s supergroup, Unplugged & Thirsty, plus Elle Roberts. Our schedule includes the ever popular opportunity to Sing Your Favourite Hymns and we expect another packed house at Hatton Arms Open Mic Session.

This year’s new artists include Lazy Alligator Jazz Band, who caused a real storm at their recent Blue Bell performances, and Barb Jungr whose March show was a sell out at the Core in Corby. In past years summer holidays have been a real challenge for The Gretton Silver Band. I am delighted that this year they have made time join us, expect a great concert at The Talbot.

2011 saw the “Opera for All” gala concert featuring baritone Mark Llewelyn Evans. Expect a stunning night with his return in “The Best of British” a celebration of the best of Musical Theatre from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Music Hall.

Further new acts are being finalised, so keep visiting the website at www.grettonmusicfestival.com for more information.

The Gretton Music Festival will feature performances at the three village pubs, The Talbot, The Blue Bell & The Hatton Arms and well as our ‘fourth pub’ the Sports and Social Club. Both our churches, St James and the Baptist Chapel are also hosting performances as are The Village Hall, The Village Green and Lydia’s Coffee Shop.

The Gretton Music Festival 2012 takes place over August Bank Holiday spanning four days with concerts from Friday 24th August through to Monday 27th August.

The 4th annual Corby Walking Festival takes place from 5-7 May 2012

The 4th annual Corby Walking Festival takes place from 5-7 May 2012

The event comprises of a 3 day walking programme to celebrate the numerous walking opportunities in Corby Borough both in the town and countryside.

The Festival programme has a variety of free walks aimed at all ages and fitness abilities, with a number of themed routes, including local history, photography and wildlife. All routes are led by qualified walk leaders. If you want a challenge, try your hand at the 34 mile Around Corby circular route, which links the 7 parishes via a network of public footpaths.

The Festival is pleased to name Lakelands Day Care Hospice as the beneficiary charity for 2012. All donations will ensure the continuation of their work providing specialist palliative care for people with life limiting illnesses. A ‘Diamonds and Tiaras’ fundraising walk will be  held on Saturday 5 May at East Carlton Country Park, to celebrate the National Queen Diamond Jubilee.

The event will finish with a Community Funday on Monday 7 May at East Carlton Country Park from 12noon – 4pm supported by Lakelands and Core Theatre. Entry is free. A number of partner organisations will be supporting the event, including Bizzy Bees Buses, Northamptonshire Ramblers, Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Northamptonshire County Council and East Carlton Health Walking Group.

Cllr Paul Beattie, Corby Borough Council member champion for Cycling and Walking said: ‘I’m pleased to be supporting this event. Corby borough is rich in open spaces in the town itself and also has the magnificent Rockingham Forest and Welland Valley on its doorstep. The Festival showcases the fact that you don’t have to travel far to enjoy a pleasant walk in one of our parks or woodland areas, like our medieval Kingswood. It‘s a great way to gain health benefits at the same time.’

The walk and events programme will be finalised within the next month. For regular updates visit the website www.corbywalkingfestival.org.uk or contact Suzanne Preston, Rural Pride Officer on 01536 463177.
